I hope the writing process is going well as you finish up your position papers. My fellow chairs and I cannot wait to read all of them! Here is an interesting update from Colombia on the status of euthanasia.
Last month, one man’s medically-induced death sparked conversations surrounding the issue of euthanasia for non-terminal illness, Psychiatric Times reported. In the city of Cali, Victor Escobar was the first Colombian with a non-terminal illness to die from the procedure. For the past two years, he has faced various hardships from many institutions to guarantee “his right to euthanasia.” Colombia is one of the first countries in the world to decriminalize the procedure. In 2014, Columbia’s Constitutional Court created regulations for euthanasia.
After reading this article, I highly recommend all delegates take a moment to realize the sensitive nature of euthanasia and its real-life reverberations, made only more evident by Escobar’s firsthand quotations. Let us know in the comments how you think a delegate (or anyone) should approach this topic from a culturally conscious perspective, and how different types of euthanasia (active, passive, etc.) may factor into your approach. We are excited to read your responses!
