Hello Delegates,
There are just 2 weeks left until BMUN 70, and I am so excited to meet you all!
With a lot of events and attention regarding euthanasia focused in European countries, I wanted to bring to light some of the cultural analysis and history of assisted suicide and euthanasia in East Asia. I highly encourage you to check out Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia: A Comparative Analysis of Dutch and East Asian Cases, an article from last month's issue of The American Journal of Bioethics.
The article discusses some precedents and agreements regarding judicial cases of assisted suicide and Euthanasia in several East Asian countries. Then, the authors compare the influence of Confucianism, widely spread and rooted in the region, on how these countries perceive and react to the right to life and the right to die.
I think that the information in this article not only informs delegates whose countries are directly mentioned, but also to everyone as they must consider the various cultural, religious, and ethical complications of euthanasia globally. Let me know in the comments your reactions to the article and/or other cultural and religious implications with euthanasia that you can share with the committee!
