Welcome to UNHRC — Karissa Lin

Hi delegates!

Welcome to the UNHRC committee blog for BMUN LXX! My name is Karissa Lin, and I will be your head chair for UNHRC alongside my incredible vice chairs: Yuriko, Kohsei, and Alaina. We are so incredibly excited to meet all of you in March!

A bit about myself — I am a junior at UC Berkeley studying Public Health, and intend on pursuing a law degree after my undergraduate studies. This is my 5th year doing MUN and 2nd year chairing at BMUN, so I’m excited to be back! Outside of classes and BMUN, I’m part of a homeless outreach group that goes around the Bay distributing Naloxone, fentanyl test strips, and other health supplies. I've also written and been a deputy editor for The Daily Californian (UC Berkeley’s newspaper), and enjoy figure skating in my free time.

Now onto our committee! As you already know, our two topics for this year are A) Interment of Uyghurs in Xinjiang, China, and B) The Right to Die: Euthanasia and Physician-Assisted Suicide. Both of these topics remain relevant to this day, though the way they impact human rights are very different. Our blogs will primarily focus on topic B as delegates often find it more difficult to engage with topics surrounding moral debate. In other words, there is not necessarily a "right" or "wrong" way to address the issue, which can make writing resolutions slightly trickier.

Our committee will also be functioning under THIMUN procedure, which is a procedural style widely used in the MUN community. Many of you many have never encountered THIMUN procedure before, but that's where this blog comes in! Over the course of the next month, your UNHRC chairs will write blogs to guide you through THIMUN procedure and both topics. Additionally, you will have access to BMUN's THIMUN guide to further prepare yourself for conference.

Please read the blogs that are posted, as they can guide you through the research process and may help narrow down discussion points for committee. Furthermore, some of the blogs will be discussing current events and updates on either of the two topics, so it's important not to miss out on those! Feel free to comment on any of the blogs if you ever have any questions, thoughts or concerns — we would love to see you interact with your chairs and fellow delegates, even before conference.

That's all for now! Please be sure to come back throughout the course of the month to get more information and participate on our blog posts! If you have any questions about UNHRC or THIMUN please don't hesitate to comment on the blog posts. You can also reach us at unhrcbmunlxx@bmun.org for specific inquiries about position papers, country policies, or if you have any suggestions/feedback for our conference committee. We may also hold a THIMUN simulation or UNHRC office hours before BMUN weekend, so be sure to look out for information about that via our blog posts.

Have fun researching and see you at BMUN LXX!
