Hi delegates!
It was great getting to meet so many of you at Office Hours last week! We hope our OH discussions were helpful for answering any questions you had about position paper feedback, solutions, THIMUN procedure, and speeches.
As your chairs for BMUN, we wanted to provide you with a few learning objectives before the start of conference. By Sunday night, we hope you’ll be able to understand and discuss most, if not all, of the following takeaways:
To what extent can countries demand transparency from another country?
Should countries be working for euthanasia laws or alternative methods such as palliative care to hold back the legalization and use of euthanasia?
- How the legalization of euthanasia may negatively affect vulnerable groups.
- Have Uyghurs been able to seek refuge abroad? How have Uyghurs and Muslim countries around the world responded to this crisis?
Topic A:
Delegates should be able to acknowledge the role of political and economic factors when considering questions and stances related to human rights issues.
During committee, delegates should think creatively about political and economic incentives when drafting their resolution. Additionally, delegates should think about ways to hold countries accountable for actions violating human rights.
Delegates should gain an awareness of the ongoing conflict in Xinjiang, as well as its relevance to human rights violations.
Understand of the persistence of cultural genocide.
Understand the role of forced abortion and sterilization in the context of this issue.
How media (i.e. press, journalism) affects the narrative around the issue.
Topic B
Delegates should understand the growing relevance of euthanasia and PAS.
Delegates should learn to approach and take a stance on topics that do not have simple, two-sided solutions.
This involves considering what types of euthanasia should be accepted.
Learning to debate this topic in a professional setting will be useful in the future, particularly when you run into controversial issues in the media or personal life that call for explaining a stance and justification.
